Chugach National Forest Trail Maintenance
Two successful volunteer events were planned and held on the Iditarod National Historic Trail (INHT) in collaboration with the USFS. Twenty total volunteers were engaged in trail stewardship through new trail construction and trail maintenance that involved clearing alders from the INHT. Volunteers received thorough safety briefings and training to safely and efficiently complete the trail work defined by the USFS.
Five youth volunteers with Alaska Geographic helped build a new trail during the first volunteer event on National Trails Day, learning what it takes to create the trails they enjoy.
Between the two events, 144 volunteer hours helped to build and maintain 1.06 miles of trail. The Alaska Trails Initiative also continued its important work of raising the profile of trails to secure more support and funding for trails and trail projects.
This grant helped support the work to create the Alaska Long Trail Workbook, a comprehensive online vision board and information repository for the trail. This informative graphic package is the product of collaboration with diverse partners and stakeholders to flesh out route specifics and identify the highest priorities for construction.
